Rate and check own word knowledge
When to use this goal
For students who say they know words they cannot explain, or who give up on words they partly know. Knowledge rating helps them see what to study. Fit depends on present levels showing they can explain at least some words.
- Baseline
- Count a word as an accurate rating when the rating matches what the student can do: know it well with a correct explanation, or a lower rating with no correct explanation. Record over- and under-ratings separately.
- Tips
- Use the ratings to make a study list of the words marked have seen it. Students can compare start and end ratings to see their growth.
- Limits
- Measures how well self-ratings match performance, not how many words are known; report both.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, at the start and end of a unit, given 10 unit words and a 3-level rating scale (know it well, have seen it, do not know it), the student will rate each word and then explain each word they gave the know-it-well rating independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, on 3 consecutive unit checks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at the start and end of each unit.
Baseline: 4 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
