Name basic emotions in photos of people
When to use this goal
For young students who do not yet name or point to emotions in others. Present levels decide fit, not age. Start with 3 or 4 emotions (happy, sad, mad, scared) shown in photos that include the situation, not faces alone, so students who read context more easily than faces have a fair chance.
- Baseline
- Show 10 photos (a mix of the 4 emotions) and record the answer and whether it came from the board or speech. Note which emotions are confused; mad and scared are often mixed up and both are fair answers in some photos.
- Tips
- Accept any response mode: speech, sign, pointing, or a device. Choose photos where the situation gives a clue as well as the face. If the student gives another reasonable answer (worried instead of scared), count it and note it.
- Limits
- Photo naming is a first step and does not show the student notices emotions in real moments (se-aw-002). Emotion words vary across families and languages; use the family's words. Not a goal about the student's own emotions.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 photos of children in everyday situations showing happy, sad, mad, or scared, and a choice board of 4 emotion symbols, the student will name or point to the emotion that fits the person in each photo independently with at least 80% accuracy on emotion photos, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
