Point out the face clues behind an emotion

When to use this goal

For students who name emotions in photos when the situation helps but guess when only the face carries the clue. Fits students who already name happy, sad, mad, and scared. Present levels, not grade, decide fit; faces are one route among several and never the only one taught.

Baseline
Show 10 face photos and record the emotion chosen and any clue named. Note which emotions get mixed up; surprised and scared are close, and both can be fair answers for some photos.
Tips
Use photos of people of different ages, skin tones, and cultures. Accept speech, sign, pointing, or a device. Pair with situation and voice clues (se-aw-003, se-aw-010) so the student has more than one way in.
Limits
Posed photos are clearer than real faces, so this does not show the student reads faces in live moments. Some students find faces hard to read for reasons practice will not change, and asking the person is always a correct strategy. The goal does not ask for eye contact.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 close-up photos of faces showing happy, sad, mad, scared, surprised, or disgusted, and a choice board of 6 emotion symbols, the student will name or select the emotion and point to or name one face clue that shows it (such as raised eyebrows, a frown, wide eyes) independently with at least 80% accuracy on face photos, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.
