Match a voice to an emotion picture
When to use this goal
For young students who respond to what words say but not to how they are said, such as missing that an adult sounds upset. Present levels and hearing status, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Play 10 recordings in random order and record each choice. Check hearing status and any auditory processing results first; a student who cannot hear pitch changes well needs a different goal.
- Tips
- Use voices the student knows, such as classroom staff, when possible. Keep the words the same so only the tone changes. Accept any response mode.
- Limits
- Recordings are cleaner than a busy classroom. The goal is not suited to students who are deaf or hard of hearing without adaptation; face and situation clues may serve them better. Tone of voice carries emotion differently across languages and families.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 short recordings of the same neutral phrase (such as "It's time to go") said in a happy, sad, or mad voice, and 3 emotion pictures, the student will point to, say, sign, or select the emotion picture that matches the voice independently with at least 80% accuracy on voice recordings, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Awareness & Perspective Taking.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
