Use the calm-down space and come back to the group
When to use this goal
For students who go to the classroom calm-down space but stay there much longer than they need to, missing large parts of instruction. Present levels decide fit, not grade. The space is a choice the student can make, never a consequence.
- Baseline
- For two weeks, record the time the student enters the space and the time they rejoin the group, plus what they did there. Look at how long the student needs to settle before choosing a target; the target should leave enough time to calm, not cut it short.
- Tips
- Time from entering the space to rejoining the group or task. If the student is still distressed when the timer ends, they may reset it once; that is part of the routine, not a failure. Keep the space free of reward items so it stays a place to reset, not a place to stay.
- Limits
- A shorter time is not a goal in itself; it matters only if the student returns ready to work. Some episodes need a longer recovery or a crisis plan. The goal does not cover what triggered the visit.
