Log stress ratings and strategies in a journal or app

When to use this goal

For students working toward running their own regulation plan who currently rely on adults to notice stress. Base the choice on whether the student can rate stress on a scale. The log can be paper, a notes app, or a check-in form.

Baseline
Give the student the log for one week with a short demonstration and count entries per day. Ask the student which format they would use: paper, phone, or a school device. Note whether entries happen at set times or only after upsets.
Tips
Count entries with a rating; the strategy field may be blank when none was needed. Review the log with the student weekly to look for patterns they choose to act on. The log belongs to the student; adults read it with permission.
Limits
Entries show the habit of checking in, not whether ratings are accurate. Students may log at the end of the day from memory; time stamps help. Logs with worrying content follow school safety procedures.

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the school day with a regulation journal, a paper tracking sheet, or a check-in app on their device, the student will record a stress or energy rating and the strategy they used, if any, in their regulation journal or app independently at least 3 times per school day, on 4 of 5 school days, as measured by frequency recording collected daily and reviewed weekly with the counselor.

Baseline: 0 times per school day.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Emotional Regulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
