Ask the teacher to check the first problem before continuing

When to use this goal

For students who finish a whole page using a wrong method, then have to redo it, or who never check whether they are on track. Present levels decide fit. The request can be spoken, a raised check card, a sticky note, or a chat.

Baseline
Across 5 independent practice tasks with a new skill, record whether the student asked for a check before item 2 and how many items they had to redo. That redo count is useful context for the student.
Tips
An opportunity is an independent task with a new skill. Score correct when the request comes before the student starts item 2. Respond quickly so waiting does not become a barrier; let them start item 2 if the teacher cannot come within a few minutes.
Limits
The goal fits new skills; asking for checks on mastered work is not needed. It does not measure accuracy.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent practice with a new skill or problem type, the student will ask the teacher to check the first item before doing the rest independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Requesting Help.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
