Share prepared IEP meeting messages with an AAC device

When to use this goal

For students who use a speech-generating device, a communication app, or a symbol board and who are usually spoken about at meetings rather than heard from. Present levels and current AAC skills, not grade, decide fit. Messages can be stored ahead of time and selected by any access method.

Baseline
Program the page with the student and, without prompts, ask them to share it with a familiar adult. Mark each message they select. Record access issues (reach, scanning speed, page navigation) separately so they are fixed rather than counted against the student.
Tips
Choose the messages with the student, using their choices and family input, in a voice the student picks. At the meeting, give wait time and ask team members to speak to the student directly. Coordinate with the SLP.
Limits
Prepared messages bring the student's voice into the meeting but do not show spontaneous language; track generative AAC use separately. Device problems on the day are an adult responsibility, not a missed step.

Number of routine steps performed independently.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Task-analysis steps

Write each step so an observer can mark it done or not done.

Data collection

A routine is broken into ordered steps; each step is recorded as independent, supported, or not completed.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during their annual IEP meeting, with an IEP page programmed on their device, the student will select prepared messages on their device to greet the team, share what they like, share what helps them, and respond to a question about their goals, performing at least 5 of 7 steps independently, on 3 consecutive rehearsals and at the annual IEP meeting, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected twice weekly in the month before the IEP meeting.

Baseline: 1 of 7 steps independently.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Task-analysis steps fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Task-analysis checklist gives task-analysis steps data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Advocacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
