Pick a learning tool before starting work

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who have a set of tools (number line, word card, pencil grip, timer) but wait for an adult to hand them out. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Watch five task starts. Record whether the student picked a tool, picked one that fits, or waited. Note which tools they use most and which they never choose.
Tips
Accept any tool that would reasonably help; students may choose differently than adults would. Over time, add tools the student can choose alone.
Limits
Measures the choice, not how the task turns out. Students may pick the same favorite tool each time; check that it fits the task.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at the start of independent work, with a labeled tool bin or picture menu at their table, the student will choose a tool that fits the task from their tool bin or menu and tell or show the adult why they picked it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during independent work.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Advocacy.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
