Turn a mistake into a helpful self-statement
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who stop working or say global put-downs after errors on corrected work. Present levels decide fit, not grade. Choose the statements with the student so they sound like the student, not like a poster.
- Baseline
- Tally helpful and unhelpful statements after errors across 4 or 5 blocks, writing down the exact words. Note how many errors the student met so the target fits the number of chances. Score only what the student says, writes, signs, or does; never use a self-esteem rating or a mood scale as the criterion.
- Tips
- Count statements said aloud, whispered to a peer, or written. A statement counts when it names something specific and a next step; "I'm fine" alone does not. If errors are rare in a block, use opportunities instead of frequency.
- Limits
- Frequency depends on how many errors happen in the block, so read it alongside the work. Private self-talk cannot be observed; written notes help capture it.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a math or writing block when they find or are shown an error in their work, the student will say or write a helpful self-statement that names the error and a next step (such as "I mixed up the sign, I'll check it") independently at least 3 times per 45-minute math or writing block, on 4 of 5 observed blocks, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 0 times per 45-minute math or writing block.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Concept & Positive Self-Talk.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 45-minute math or writing block.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
