Name what to practice after a low score

When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who decide they are "bad at" a subject after one low quiz, spelling test, or game loss. Present levels decide fit, not grade. Coping with strong upset belongs in emotional regulation; this goal is about what the student says about themselves after the setback.

Baseline
Record what the student says after the next 4 setbacks, word for word. Note who was nearby and how long it was before the student returned to work. Score only what the student says, writes, signs, or does; never use a self-esteem rating or a mood scale as the criterion.
Tips
Hand back scores privately when possible and give a minute before asking. Count statements tied to effort, strategy, or practice. Disappointment is normal and is not scored.
Limits
Measures the statement, not whether the student then practices. Add a follow-through step if that is the concern.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a quiz, test, or assignment is returned with a score lower than they hoped, the student will independently make a statement that ties the result to something they can practice or change (such as "I need to study my 7s") rather than a statement about being bad at it in at least 3 of 4 opportunities, across 2 consecutive grading periods, as measured by direct observation collected after each returned quiz or test.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Concept & Positive Self-Talk.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
