Select a symbol with eye gaze or a switch when it is named
When to use this goal
For students whose motor abilities require an alternative access method (eye-gaze board or device, or a switch with scanning) and who are learning to make accurate selections. This is an access goal that precedes or runs alongside language goals. Base the choice on the AAC, OT, and PT evaluations.
- Baseline
- With the OT and PT, confirm positioning, switch site, and calibration. Run 20 trials with 2 symbols, then 4, and record accuracy and time. Fatigue changes accuracy quickly, so keep sessions short and note the time of day. Chance depends on field size.
- Tips
- Score correct when the selection matches the named symbol within about 10 seconds. Keep the dwell time or scan rate fixed within a probe and record it. Use motivating symbols (favorite songs, people) so the student wants to select. Pair access practice with real choices (sl-aac-022) so the skill has a purpose.
- Limits
- Access accuracy depends on positioning, fatigue, vision, and equipment settings, so document all of them. Accurate selection is not communication until the student uses it to say something. The template does not choose the access method.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given an eye-gaze frame with 2 to 4 symbols and a spoken request to find one, 20 trials, the student will select the named symbol by holding their gaze on it or by activating the switch when the scan reaches it independently with at least 85% accuracy on accurate selections by eye gaze or switch, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about AAC & Augmentative Communication.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
