Imitate words containing the target sound after a model
When to use this goal
For students accurate in syllables who are not yet accurate in words without a model. The imitation step sits between syllables (sl-art-007) and independent single words (sl-art-001). Base the choice on syllable-level data.
- Baseline
- Present 20 words with a model and record each production. Compare with the same words produced from a picture without a model; the gap shows how much the model is doing. Note word positions and vowel contexts that are easier.
- Tips
- The model is part of the task, so it is listed in the support and is not scored as a prompt. Score correct when the target sound in the repeated word has no substitution, omission, or distortion. Fade the model by adding a delay before the student's turn, then move to sl-art-001 for independent naming. For preschool students, embed the trials in play rather than running them as a drill.
- Limits
- Imitation is the most supported word-level task; high imitation accuracy does not predict spontaneous use. If a student imitates accurately but cannot name pictures, the next step is fading the model, not more imitation.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 words containing Blank to fill in: [target sound, e.g. /l/] in the initial position, each spoken by the SLP first, the student will repeat each word with the target sound produced correctly after an imitative model from the SLP with at least 85% accuracy on imitated target-sound productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target sound]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
