Tally own target-sound errors from a recorded speech sample
When to use this goal
For older students who can produce the target sound but do not notice errors in their own connected speech. Listening back to a recording and counting errors builds the self-monitoring that carryover depends on. Base the choice on sl-art-005 or sl-art-006 data.
- Baseline
- Have the student count errors on three recordings and compare each count with the SLP's. Note whether the student over-counts (hears errors that are not there) or under-counts; under-counting usually means the student cannot yet discriminate the error in their own voice.
- Tips
- Each recording reviewed is one opportunity, scored correct when the student's count is within 2 of the SLP's count. Keep recordings short so the task stays manageable. Once counts match reliably, pair with live self-correction (sl-art-005) and conversation (sl-art-004). Students can keep doing this on their own phone after services end.
- Limits
- Recognizing errors after the fact does not guarantee catching them live. The agreement rule (within 2) is a judgment call; adjust it for the number of occurrences in the sample. Recording in class needs the student's consent and school privacy rules.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 2-minute recording of their own conversation or reading that contains at least 20 occurrences of the target sound, the student will listen to the recording and tally each target-sound error, producing a count within 2 of the SLP's count independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
