Keep vocalic /r/ clear in sentences
When to use this goal
For students who are accurate with vocalic /r/ (er, ar, or, air, ear, ire) in single words but lose it when the words are in sentences. Base the choice on word-level data from sl-art-020 and a sentence probe. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Use the same words the student says correctly in isolation and put them into sentences; the drop in accuracy is the target. Score every vocalic /r/ occurrence, including ones in non-target words, so the data show whether accuracy is spreading beyond the practiced words.
- Tips
- Score each vocalic /r/ in the target words; count non-target /r/ words separately as a generalization check. Self-made sentences are harder than read sentences because the student must plan the words and the sound at once. Older students often like scoring their own recording against the SLP's score.
- Limits
- Sentence accuracy in therapy still overstates accuracy in class and conversation. If the student has errors on prevocalic /r/ too, write those into sl-art-022 rather than mixing both into this template.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences, each with two or more vocalic /r/ words drawn from the contexts the student has practiced, the student will produce vocalic /r/ correctly in each target word within the sentence independently with at least 85% accuracy on vocalic /r/ productions in sentences, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
