Match /r/ to a visual feedback target
When to use this goal
For older students with residual /r/ errors that have not changed with traditional cues, when the SLP has access to a visual feedback tool (such as a real-time sound display or ultrasound). Present levels and treatment history decide fit. This is a method-specific goal; the team should agree on the tool before writing it.
- Baseline
- Score a 20-word /r/ probe by ear before starting feedback, then score the same words without the display after each block. Progress is judged by ear on trials without feedback; the display score alone is not the outcome.
- Tips
- Score correct by the SLP's ear, not by the display; the display is a teaching tool. Fade feedback (every trial, every other trial, then none) as accuracy rises. Pair with sentence work (sl-art-024) once words without feedback are accurate. Describe the tool by type in the IEP, not by brand.
- Limits
- Requires equipment and training many schools do not have; if neither is available, use sl-art-023. Gains with the display can disappear without it, which is why the goal scores trials without feedback.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 /r/ syllables and words with real-time visual feedback on a screen showing the student's sound against a target pattern, the student will produce /r/ to match the target pattern on the display independently with at least 70% accuracy on /r/ productions judged correct by ear, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 10% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
