Say the target sound in class vocabulary
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students whose target sound is accurate in practice words but not in the long academic words they must say in class (photosynthesis, Revolution, perimeter). Base the choice on sentence-level data and the student's own list of words that matter in their classes. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Ask the student and one or two content teachers for the unit vocabulary, pick 20 words with the target sound, and score each production. Note whether errors cluster in longer words or in particular word positions.
- Tips
- Refresh the word list with each new unit so practice supports class work. The student can keep the list on their phone or in a binder for self-practice. Score only the target sound, not other pronunciation. Words with more than one target sound count each occurrence.
- Limits
- A probe of class words in therapy is still not class talk; pair with a class-based template (sl-art-034 or sl-art-037) to check carryover. Some multisyllabic errors are about sequencing, not the target sound (see sl-phon-015).
Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID sl-art-026.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 vocabulary words with Blank to fill in: [target sound, e.g. /r/] chosen from the student's current class units, the student will produce the target sound correctly in each class vocabulary word independently with at least 90% accuracy on target-sound productions in class vocabulary, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 50% accuracy.

Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target sound]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
