Find a central /s/ for a lateral lisp
When to use this goal
For students with a lateral lisp who cannot yet make /s/ with air flowing down the middle of the tongue. This is the shaping step before word work in sl-art-019. Base the choice on the SLP's assessment and stimulability; students with a frontal lisp usually start at the word level instead.
- Baseline
- Listen for side airflow on /s/, /z/, "sh", "ch", and "j"; a lateral lisp often affects the whole group. Try the /t/-to-/s/ shaping, the straw, and a held "ee" smile, and record which one produces a central sound most often.
- Tips
- Score a trial correct only when the SLP hears no side airflow; a straw or a mirror can help the student check too. Keep trials short and frequent. Once a central /s/ holds in syllables, move to words and sentences with sl-art-019 and sl-art-028. If "sh", "ch", and "j" are also lateral, see sl-art-040.
- Limits
- Lateral lisps are often persistent and need many short practice sessions. Accuracy in isolation does not predict word accuracy. If a student has a structural or dental concern, check with the family and dentist before relying on placement cues.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 trials of /s/ shaped from a quick series of /t/ sounds with the teeth closed, the student will produce /s/ with central airflow and no side air escape independently with at least 80% accuracy on central /s/ productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 10% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
