Finish words with -st, -ts, and -ks clusters
When to use this goal
For students who are accurate with /s/ alone but drop or distort it in clusters at the end of words (nest, cats, books, asks). Base the choice on a cluster probe. Present levels, not grade, decide fit; final clusters in some dialects are simplified by rule and are not errors.
- Baseline
- Probe each final cluster type with 4 words and record whether the student omits a sound, distorts the /s/, or produces both. Find out whether final cluster reduction is a feature of the student's dialect (for example "tes" for "test" in African American English); if it is, do not target it.
- Tips
- Score the cluster correct when both sounds are present and the /s/ is undistorted. Final -sts and -sks (nests, asks) are hard for most speakers in fast speech; leave them for last. The word-boundary step makes a good warm-up because the sounds are easier when split across two words.
- Limits
- Final cluster simplification is common in casual adult speech, so expect natural reduction in conversation and score structured tasks only. Do not apply this template to dialect-based patterns.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 picture or word cards ending in -st, -sk, -sp, -ts, or -ks, the student will produce both sounds of the final cluster with a clear /s/ independently with at least 80% accuracy on final /s/ cluster productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
