Say /l/ at word ends and before consonants

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who produce initial /l/ but replace the "dark" /l/ at the end of words and before consonants with a vowel sound ("bao" for ball, "miok" for milk). Base the choice on a probe by position. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
Probe /l/ in final position and before consonants separately from initial /l/. Some speakers and dialects produce a vowel-like final /l/ as a normal feature; ask the family and listen to the community dialect before calling it an error.
Tips
Score correct when the tongue tip contact is heard; a final /l/ that sounds like "oo" is incorrect. Words with /l/ before another consonant are the hardest; save them for the end of the year. Multisyllabic words ending in -le (table, purple) are a useful bridge to sentences.
Limits
Vowel-like final /l/ is common in some adult speech and dialects, which limits how far this goal should go. It measures structured words and sentences only.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 picture or word cards with /l/ at the end of the word (such as ball, school, pencil), the student will produce /l/ with tongue-tip contact at the end of each word independently with at least 80% accuracy on final and pre-consonant /l/ productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
