Read school announcements with the target sound

When to use this goal

For students working on carryover who would like a real speaking role, such as reading morning announcements, a class news report, or lines in a class play. Base the choice on reading and sentence-level data and the student's interest. This is an opt-in goal: the student chooses the role.

Baseline
Have the student read a sample script in a practice room and score each target-sound word. Check with the teacher or office about how often the role comes up, and agree on how the reading will be heard and scored (live or recorded).
Tips
Each script reading is one opportunity, scored correct when every target-sound word is correct. Recording the reading lets the student self-rate afterward. Real audiences raise the stakes, which is the point of the goal, but the student can switch to a lower-pressure version at any time.
Limits
Opportunities depend on the school schedule. A student who does not want a public role should not be given this goal; use sl-art-037 instead. Scripts are prepared, so this still sits between reading and spontaneous speech.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when reading a prepared script of 4 to 6 sentences for the school or class announcements, the student will independently read the script without any target-sound errors in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive months, as measured by direct observation collected each time the student reads a script, at least 5 times per month.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
