Shape the back sounds /k/ and /g/
When to use this goal
For young children who cannot yet produce /k/ or /g/ at all, even in imitation, and say /t/ and /d/ instead. This is the shaping step before words. Base the choice on stimulability. For children who can make /k/ and /g/ but replace them in words as a pattern, see sl-phon-002.
- Baseline
- Test stimulability for /k/ and /g/ with a model, with the tongue-tip-down cue, and in a reclined position. Note whether a cough or a gargle gets the back of the tongue up. If the child cannot produce the sounds with any cue, discuss with the team whether a motor speech evaluation is needed.
- Tips
- Score a trial correct when the SLP hears a back sound, not /t/ or /d/. Make practice playful for preschool children: sound effects, animal noises, and turn-taking games give many trials without drill. Move to words (sl-art-049 or sl-phon-002) when syllables hold.
- Limits
- Isolation and syllables are the start, not the goal. Many young children front /k/ and /g/ for a while as part of typical development; check age expectations before writing the goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 trials of /k/ and /g/ alone and in syllables with the vowels the student finds easiest, the student will produce /k/ and /g/ with the back of the tongue raised in isolation and syllables after an imitative model from the SLP with at least 70% accuracy on /k/ and /g/ productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 10% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
