Say target words in a timed drill
When to use this goal
For students who are accurate with the target sound in words when they slow down but whose productions break down at a natural pace, and who benefit from many practice trials per session. A timed drill counts correct productions per minute, which tracks both accuracy and automatic, quick production. Base the choice on word-level accuracy of at least moderate level.
- Baseline
- Run three 1-minute drills with the same deck and take the median of correct productions per minute. Count incorrect productions too, so speed is not gained at the cost of accuracy. Use a fresh shuffle each time.
- Tips
- Count only correct productions; incorrect ones are recorded separately and should stay low. A rising rate with steady accuracy suggests the sound is becoming automatic. Students often like graphing their own rate. Keep the drill to one or two timings per session within a session full of practice trials.
- Limits
- Speed is not the end goal; carryover into talk is. A student who rushes and makes errors needs the pace slowed, not pushed. Not suitable for students early in learning the sound or with motor speech planning difficulty.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 1-minute timed drill naming a shuffled deck of 30 target-sound word cards, the student will name each card aloud with the target sound produced correctly independently at a rate of at least 25 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 12 correct responses per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
