Say the target sound in made-up words

When to use this goal

For students whose practice words have become memorized and who need to show the sound in new combinations. Made-up words (such as "rable" or "shoob") have no stored pronunciation, so the student must plan the sound fresh. Some SLPs also use them early, before real words, for students with very strong old habits. Base the choice on word-level data.

Baseline
Compare accuracy on made-up words with accuracy on practiced real words. A large gap shows the sound is tied to familiar words. For students who read the words, check that decoding errors are not counted as speech errors.
Tips
Score only the target sound. Keep made-up words short and easy to say apart from the target sound. Students often like inventing names themselves, which can become the third step of the progression.
Limits
Made-up words are a training tool; the outcome that matters is real words in real talk. Reading made-up words mixes decoding with speech, so present them spoken for students who are still learning to decode.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 printed or spoken made-up words with the target sound in different positions, the student will produce the target sound correctly in each made-up word independently with at least 85% accuracy on target-sound productions in made-up words, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
