Hold back sounds in clusters like cl, gr and sk

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who produce single /k/ and /g/ but drop them or change them in clusters (clap, green, skate, desk). Base the choice on a cluster probe after singletons are stable.

Baseline
Probe 20 cluster words, sorted by cluster type (kl, kr, gl, gr, sk, final -sk). Errors often cluster in one or two types; start there.
Tips
Score the whole cluster: both consonants present and the back sound correct. Pair with s-cluster work if /s/ is also a target.
Limits
Cluster reduction can be a phonological pattern rather than a placement error; if many cluster types are reduced, see sl-phon goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 20 picture or word cards with /k/ or /g/ clusters (such as clap, glue, green, skate, desk), the student will say each cluster with both consonants and the /k/ or /g/ made at the back of the mouth independently with at least 80% accuracy on /k/ and /g/ cluster productions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Articulation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
