Answer who, what, and where questions about a picture
When to use this goal
For young students who label pictures but cannot answer a question about them, or who answer every question with the same word type (a name for "where"). Base the choice on the SLP's assessment. For questions about a heard passage, see sl-rec-002.
- Baseline
- Ask 10 questions of each type about simple scenes and record accuracy by question word. Note whether errors are wrong type (a place for "who") or labeling the whole picture. Check receptive understanding of question words (sl-rec-021) if answers are random.
- Tips
- Score correct when the answer gives the type of information the question word asks for and is accurate for the picture; a single word is fine. Accept pointing only when the goal allows it, since the aim is an expressive answer. Keep the question wording simple and constant. Add when and why for students who have the first three.
- Limits
- Picture questions are concrete; when and why questions require more than this template measures. Answers depend on vocabulary for the pictured items. The task does not show whether the student answers questions in conversation.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 picture scenes and asked one who, what, or where question about each, the student will answer each question with the kind of information the question word asks for (a person for who, an action or object for what, a place for where) independently with at least 85% accuracy on wh- questions about pictures, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 35% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Expressive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
