Answer a question about a text with evidence from it
When to use this goal
For older students who answer text questions with a general opinion and no reference to the text, which most secondary classes require in discussion and writing. Base the choice on class work samples. Works with text read aloud or read by the student.
- Baseline
- Ask five text-dependent questions on two short passages and record whether the answer includes an answer, a piece of evidence, and the link between them. Check comprehension with literal questions first so evidence failures are not comprehension failures.
- Tips
- Score correct when the answer is reasonable and the evidence cited actually supports it; evidence that does not support the answer is incorrect. Reading the quote aloud or paraphrasing it both count. Passages at the student's listening level, read aloud, keep the goal about language rather than decoding.
- Limits
- The task combines comprehension, memory for the text, and language; use short passages and keep them available. Evidence quality is judged by the scorer. The goal does not measure written responses, which may need a writing goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after listening to or reading a short passage and being asked a question that requires evidence, the student will answer the question and cite a specific detail or quote from the text that supports the answer independently with at least 80% accuracy on text-based questions, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Expressive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
