Name familiar pictures quickly and accurately
When to use this goal
For students who know common words (they point to them when named) but are slow or inaccurate when asked to say them, with long pauses, fillers, or wrong but related words. Base the choice on the SLP's word-finding assessment and on evidence that the student knows the words receptively.
- Baseline
- Check receptive knowledge of the 20 pictures first (point to the named one); keep only known words. Then time each naming response. Record correct within 3 seconds, correct but slow, related wrong word ("sock" for "shoe"), and no response, since the error type guides strategy choice.
- Tips
- Score correct only when the target word comes within 3 seconds with no cue (or with the cue named in the support). Use the same picture set across probes and a separate set for teaching, so gains are not from practicing the probe items. Teach strategies with sl-exp-006; this template measures speed and accuracy of naming.
- Limits
- Picture naming is a narrow task; word-finding in conversation can look different. Time limits can raise anxiety; keep the tone game-like. Students who are learning English may name items in another language first; accept a correct word in any language unless the goal is about English vocabulary.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 pictures of familiar nouns and verbs the student identified correctly in a receptive check, the student will name each picture with the target word within 3 seconds independently with at least 85% accuracy on timed picture-naming items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 55% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Expressive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
