Identify persuasive techniques in audio and video clips

When to use this goal

For secondary students who take advertisements, influencers, and persuasive speech at face value. The skill is naming the technique being used (emotional appeal, celebrity, bandwagon, exaggeration). Base the choice on a probe with clips.

Baseline
Show 10 clips using 4 or 5 taught techniques and record whether the student names the technique and gives evidence. Note whether the student is swayed by the clip ("I'd buy that") without noticing why, which is the point of the goal.
Tips
Score correct when both the technique and a piece of evidence are given; a technique name alone is half credit only if the team decides to score that way (note it). Use clips with one dominant technique for probes. Connect to the student's own media use. The reading area covers persuasive text.
Limits
Clips often use several techniques, so agree on the primary one in advance. Vocabulary for technique names must be taught first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after watching or listening to 10 short advertisement or persuasive clips, the student will name the persuasive technique used in each clip and point to the words or images that show it independently with at least 80% accuracy on persuasive techniques identified with evidence, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Listening Comprehension & Auditory Processing.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
