Summarize a podcast or news segment aloud
When to use this goal
For high school students who can answer questions about audio but cannot pull it together into a short summary. Summarizing spoken media is needed in civics, English, and everyday life. Base the choice on recorded summaries and the SLP's assessment.
- Baseline
- Record summaries of two or three segments of similar length and score each row. Note whether the student lists details in order without a main point, or gives a main point without support. Choose segments with clear structure at first.
- Tips
- Score from a recording. Paraphrase is the goal; accept the student's own words and dialect. Choose segments on topics the student cares about as well as class content. Summaries may be given in writing or with AAC if speaking is not the student's main mode.
- Limits
- Background knowledge affects scores; pre-teach unfamiliar names or terms. Summary also draws on expressive language; a low score may reflect formulation rather than listening, so compare with question answering (sl-lis-023).
