Get a full phrase out on one breath
When to use this goal
For students with dysarthria or low breath support whose words fade or run out partway through a phrase. Present levels decide fit, with input from the PT, OT, or school nurse on posture and health needs.
- Baseline
- Record 10 phrases and score whether the last word is as audible as the first. Note how many words the student gets out per breath now; set phrase length just above that.
- Tips
- Seating and posture affect breath support; set them up first with the PT or OT. Score by ear: the last word must be heard without the listener leaning in. Stop if the student shows fatigue.
- Limits
- Health conditions can change breath support from day to day; record notes on fatigue or illness. The IEP goal does not replace a medical or respiratory plan. Not a voice goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 practiced phrases of 4 to 6 words, said after a planned breath in a supported seated position, the student will take a breath before speaking and say the whole phrase on that breath with every word audible to the end independently with at least 80% accuracy on phrases finished on one breath with every word audible, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
