Summarize an informational text aloud

6-8, 9-12Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who retell informational text by repeating random facts, or everything, instead of the main idea and key details. Base the choice on class work and the SLP's assessment. Works with text read aloud, audio, or video.

Baseline
Elicit summaries of three short passages of similar length and topic familiarity and score them. Record summary length; very long summaries usually mean the student cannot distinguish main from minor. Confirm the main idea with the content teacher before scoring.
Tips
Score each row 0 to 2 as defined. Agree on the main idea and key details for each passage in advance. Spoken summaries can be recorded; written summaries can be used for the writing area but this goal scores the oral version. Use passages from the student's actual classes so the skill transfers.
Limits
Summarizing mixes comprehension, memory, and language; low scores need error analysis to find the breakdown. Passage difficulty must be controlled. The goal does not measure understanding of the content beyond the summary.
