Produce all syllables in two- and three-syllable words
When to use this goal
For students who drop unstressed syllables ("nana" for "banana", "puter" for "computer"). Base the choice on the SLP's phonological analysis and whether the student can imitate the full word. Common in preschool and alongside motor speech difficulty.
- Baseline
- Probe 20 or more untrained two-, three-, and four-syllable words and record which syllable is dropped. Check imitation of the full word with tapping; if the student still cannot produce it, the need may be motor planning (sl-phon-014). Note whether the pattern appears only in longer words.
- Tips
- Score a word correct when all syllables are present, even if a sound inside a syllable is in error; record other patterns separately. Tapping or clapping syllables gives the student a visual and motor anchor. Choose words the child wants to say (favorite characters, foods) so practice carries into daily talk.
- Limits
- Tracks syllable count, not sound accuracy or stress. Some long words are rare in a young child's speech, so probes may feel artificial; use pictures the child can name.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 pictures of two- and three-syllable words with an unstressed syllable (such as banana, tomato, elephant), the student will produce every syllable of each word independently with at least 80% accuracy on multisyllabic words produced with all syllables, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
