Contrast several sounds the child merges into one
When to use this goal
For children who use one sound in place of many (for example, /t/ for /k/, /s/, "sh", and "ch"), so many words sound the same. Multiple-opposition sets pair the replacement sound against several target sounds at once (two, coo, sue, shoe). Base the choice on the SLP's analysis showing a sound collapse; this approach suits children with severe, highly unintelligible speech.
- Baseline
- Map which sounds collapse into the replacement sound and choose 3 or 4 that differ from each other in more than one way (place, manner, voicing). Probe each set and record what the child says for each word.
- Tips
- Score correct when the child's word is clearly different from the others in its set, even if the target sound is not fully accurate. The game condition shows the child that the listener can only give the right picture when the sounds differ. Change sets as sounds emerge.
- Limits
- Demands a careful phonological analysis to set up. Accuracy at the word level in sets does not show use in talk; probe untrained words regularly.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 4 picture sets of 4 words that differ only in the first sound (such as two, coo, sue, shoe), the student will name each picture in the set with a first sound that sets it apart from the others independently with at least 70% accuracy on words produced with a distinct first sound, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 20% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Phonological Processes.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
