Fix the word when a listener picks wrong
When to use this goal
For children who can make the target pattern when cued but do not change their word when a listener misunderstands. A game in which the listener acts on exactly what was said gives the child a reason to repair. Base the choice on the child's ability to make the pattern in imitation.
- Baseline
- Play the game and record each time the listener's wrong pick follows the child's error, and what the child does next. Some children give up or repeat the same form; note this, since it shows the repair is the skill to teach.
- Tips
- Each misunderstanding is one opportunity, scored correct when the child's next try includes the pattern. Keep the game light: misunderstandings are part of the fun, not a punishment. Always give the child what they wanted after a repair attempt.
- Limits
- Opportunities depend on the child's errors in the game, so their number varies; play until 10 misunderstandings are scored, across sessions if needed. Some children become frustrated by repeated misunderstandings; end the round if that happens.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a picture-request game in which the listener hands over the picture that matches what the child said, including the wrong one when the pattern is missing, the student will say the word again with the target pattern after the listener picks the wrong item independently in at least 7 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
