Share a prepared talk with a small group
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who stop after a sentence or two when asked to share a prepared talk, or who pass whenever a group is listening. Present levels and observation of class sharing, not grade, decide fit. Start with a small group of familiar peers before the whole class.
- Baseline
- Time two or three short talks on topics the student picked, from the first word to the closing line or the point where they stop. Note whether they stop because they ran out of ideas, lost their place, or wanted to leave the spotlight; each points to a different support.
- Tips
- Time on-topic talk only; pauses to look at the plan card count, long silences after the student has finished do not. Let the student pick the first topics so the measure reflects speaking, not topic knowledge. Move to the whole class once small-group talks are steady. Never score eye contact, posture, or stillness, and never count stuttering, AAC use, an accent or dialect, or harmless movement against the student.
- Limits
- Longer is not always better: a two-minute talk that wanders has not met the purpose, so pair this with a rubric goal once length is steady. Does not measure organization, language, or speech sound accuracy.

Review: Unit fits the behavior. Duration measures how long something lasts. The behavior should describe an ongoing activity.
Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Oral Presentation & Public Speaking.
