Point to the picture that matches a spoken sentence
When to use this goal
For students who understand single words but miss meaning carried by word order, pronouns, or endings ("The girl is pushed by the boy," "They are not running"). Base the choice on a receptive grammar assessment. The expressive versions of these structures are in syntax-morphology.
- Baseline
- Probe 10 items for each structure (pronouns, plurals, negatives, present versus past, reversible word order) and record accuracy by structure. Most students need only one or two structures targeted; list them in the condition. Check hearing, since unstressed endings are easy to miss.
- Tips
- Name the structures included in the condition. Score correct when the student points to the matching picture on the first try; the pictures must differ only in the feature being tested. Say sentences at a normal rate without stressing the key word unless that is the support. Use untrained sentences for probes.
- Limits
- Picture sets are hard to make for some structures and the field size allows guessing; use at least 10 items per structure. Understanding in a quiet picture task does not guarantee understanding in fast classroom speech.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a field of three or four pictures that differ only in one grammatical feature and a spoken sentence, for 10 items, the student will point to the picture that matches the sentence independently with at least 85% accuracy on sentence-picture items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 45% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
