Follow spoken instructions with technical vocabulary in a lab or work task

When to use this goal

For high school students who can follow everyday directions but lose spoken instructions that contain course or job vocabulary (lab equipment, tool names, safety terms). Base the choice on course demands and transition goals. Coordinates with vocational goals in functional skills.

Baseline
With the course teacher, list 15 to 20 technical terms the student must act on and probe them in instructions with the materials present. Record whether errors come from unknown terms, step order, or memory. Observe one real class session to see how the student copes (watching peers, asking, guessing).
Tips
Score correct when every step is carried out with the right materials in order after one presentation; asking for a repeat is recorded as the support used, not as an error, when the behavior allows it. Pre-teach the terms with the diagram and use untrained instruction wording for probes. Safety instructions must be mastered before independent practice.
Limits
Performance depends on course vocabulary taught elsewhere; coordinate with the teacher. Lab and work settings are noisy, which affects listening in ways a quiet probe does not show. Does not replace the course's own safety assessment.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken two- or three-step instructions using vocabulary from a current science lab, shop, or culinary class, the student will carry out each instruction with the correct materials and steps in order independently with at least 85% accuracy on technical instructions, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
