Choose the picture that answers a spoken question
When to use this goal
For students with limited spoken language (or who use AAC) whose understanding of wh- questions about spoken sentences needs to be measured without a spoken answer. The student hears a sentence and a question, then picks the answer from pictures. Base the choice on the SLP's assessment.
- Baseline
- Give 10 items with 3 choices, one correct, one that fits the question word but not the sentence, and one that fits the sentence but not the question word. The error pattern shows whether the question word or the sentence is the problem.
- Tips
- Score correct when the chosen picture answers the question. Build distractors carefully (see baseline) so success is not guessing. This template suits students who use AAC or have motor speech needs, since no spoken answer is needed.
- Limits
- Picture choice tasks have chance success (33% with 3 choices); targets should be well above chance. The goal does not measure answering open questions.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken sentences, each followed by a who, what, where, when, or why question, and a field of 3 picture answers, the student will select the picture that answers the question about the sentence independently with at least 80% accuracy on spoken wh- questions with picture choices, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
