Pick the picture for a sentence with not

PK, K-2Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who pick the picture of the named thing even when the sentence says it is not happening ("The dog is not sleeping"). Negation in sentences comes before not and except in directions (sl-rec-023). Base the choice on the SLP's assessment.

Baseline
Give 10 negative and 10 matching positive sentences mixed together. A student who picks the named action every time will score high on positive items and low on negative ones; that pattern confirms the need.
Tips
Mix negative and positive items so the student must listen to every word. Say not at normal stress. Score correct when the choice matches the sentence.
Limits
Picture tasks have chance success. Hearing in noise affects small words such as not. The goal does not measure saying negative sentences (see sl-syn-015).

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 spoken sentences with not or no (such as "The baby is not crying" or "Find the box with no ball") and 2 to 3 picture choices, the student will select the picture or object that matches the negative sentence independently with at least 80% accuracy on negative sentences, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
