Point to named pictures in either language
When to use this goal
For young bilingual students whose SLP assessment in both languages (with an interpreter as needed) shows a vocabulary need in both. Testing and scoring words in either language shows the student's full vocabulary and avoids mistaking a learning-English difference for a disorder. Not for students whose only need is learning English.
- Baseline
- Test each word in both languages on different days and give credit if it is known in either (conceptual scoring). Record which language each word was known in. Ask the family which words are used at home.
- Tips
- Score correct when the student points to the right picture in either language. Encourage the family to keep using the home language; it supports English learning. Bilingual staff or interpreters should give home-language trials.
- Limits
- Fair scoring needs someone who speaks the home language. The goal does not measure English proficiency, which belongs with English learner services. Some words are known in only one language because of where they are used; that is typical.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 20 picture sets of 4 and words named in the home language or English, with an interpreter or bilingual staff as needed, the student will point to the named picture when the word is given in either language independently with at least 80% accuracy on vocabulary items scored in either language, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
