Answer test questions with not and except

When to use this goal

For older students who know the content but miss read-aloud test questions built with not, except, least, best, and all of the following. This test language is common in classroom and state tests. Base the choice on test error analysis and the SLP's assessment.

Baseline
Give 10 questions with test words and 10 plain questions on the same content. A large gap between the two sets shows the test language, not the content, is the problem.
Tips
Use questions on content the student already knows. Score correct when the chosen answer fits the test wording. Teach the student to restate the question; this is a lifelong test strategy.
Limits
Content knowledge still affects scores. The goal does not measure reading the questions independently.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 multiple-choice questions on studied content read aloud, each using not, except, least, or best, the student will select the answer that matches the key test word in the question (such as not, except, or least) independently with at least 85% accuracy on read-aloud test-language questions, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 45% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Receptive Language.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
