Name colors, shapes, and numbers
When to use this goal
For preschool and kindergarten students who do not yet name basic colors, shapes, or numerals that classroom routines and directions depend on. Base the choice on a concept screening; confirm the student can match and point to each concept before targeting naming.
- Baseline
- Probe each concept set separately (8 to 10 colors, 6 to 8 shapes, numerals 1 to 10) and record which are named, which are matched or pointed to but not named, and which are unknown. Screen color vision if color errors are consistent (for example, red and green confused). Check the home language: a child may name colors at home in another language.
- Tips
- Pick one concept set for the goal or list all three in the condition and score them as separate probes. Score correct when the name matches, in any mode. Keep the concept and the question constant across probes (color cards for color, not mixed objects where size or name can distract). This supports classroom participation ("get the blue folder") rather than math; for counting goals, see the math area.
- Limits
- Color and shape naming are rote labels and do not show broader vocabulary growth; pair with sl-sem-001 if labeling is a general need. Students with color vision differences will plateau on some colors regardless of language skill.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 colored objects or color cards and asked "What color?", the student will name the color, shape, or number shown using speech, sign, or a communication device independently with at least 90% accuracy on color, shape, or number items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
