Name category members in one minute
When to use this goal
For students who know category words but retrieve few members, which shows up as slow word finding in class. Base the choice on a word fluency probe and the SLP's assessment. For sorting and naming the category, see sl-rec-004.
- Baseline
- Run three 1-minute probes with different familiar categories and record the number of different correct members per probe. Count repeats and non-members separately. Compare with a letter-fluency probe (words starting with a sound) if the SLP wants to separate retrieval speed from category knowledge.
- Tips
- Count each correct, non-repeated category member named in the minute; repeats, non-members, and subcategory labels used as a list ("farm animals") are not counted. Use categories of similar breadth each week and rotate them so the student does not rehearse one list. Teaching subcategory scanning ("think of the farm, then the zoo") is a useful strategy and can be the chosen support early on.
- Limits
- Counts vary with category breadth and with the student's interests, so keep the category pool consistent. The measure captures retrieval speed and breadth, not whether the student can define or use the words. Very anxious students may freeze on timed tasks; untimed baselines help interpret low scores.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a spoken category name (such as animals, foods, things in a kitchen) and one minute, the student will name different members of the category independently at a rate of at least 10 correct category members per minute, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.
Baseline: 4 correct category members per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
