Name subcategories and their members
When to use this goal
For students who group words only at the broadest level (all "animals") and need the finer organization that textbooks and science vocabulary rely on. Base the choice on a categorization probe and classroom vocabulary demands.
- Baseline
- Probe 10 broad categories and record how many subcategories and members the student produces for each. Check whether the student can sort pictures into given subcategories before asking them to generate the labels. Note which categories from upcoming units will be needed.
- Tips
- Score an item correct when every named subcategory and member fits; one wrong member makes the item incorrect, and the SLP records what was wrong. Accept any valid subcategory (animals: pets, farm animals, birds). Build hierarchy diagrams with the student during teaching, then remove them for probes.
- Limits
- Subcategory knowledge is content-specific, so progress on everyday categories may not transfer to science taxonomies without direct teaching. The task has a heavy expressive load; a sorting version may isolate the concept better for some students.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 category names (such as animals, food, transportation) and asked to name two subcategories and two members of each, the student will name two subcategories of the given category and at least two members of each subcategory independently with at least 80% accuracy on category items, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 20% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
