Name familiar pictures quickly

K-2, 3-5Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who know the names of common objects but retrieve them slowly, which shows up as long pauses in talk and slow word reading. A timed naming probe tracks retrieval speed with known words. Base the choice on naming accuracy (high) versus naming speed (slow) on assessment.

Baseline
Confirm the student can name every picture untimed first; only known words belong on the sheet. Run three 1-minute timings and record correct names per minute and errors. Compare with same-age peers on the same sheet if available.
Tips
Count correct names per minute; skipped and incorrect items are not counted. Use a new order each probe. Rapid naming speed is partly stable, so expect modest gains and use the data to plan accommodations (more wait time) as well.
Limits
Naming speed is influenced by attention and articulation. Faster naming on a sheet may not change conversation. It is not a reading measure.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute timed sheet of familiar pictures from 5 known categories, presented in rows, the student will name the pictures in order across each row independently at a rate of at least 35 correct responses per minute, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, using the median of 3 timings, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 20 correct responses per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Vocabulary & Semantics.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
