Mark past events with regular past tense -ed
When to use this goal
For students who tell about finished events without marking tense ("Yesterday I jump"). Forms that follow the student's home dialect are not errors and must not be targeted; confirm with the family before choosing this structure. Base the choice on a narrative or language sample; check that the student can produce final /t/ and /d/.
- Baseline
- Elicit 20 past contexts covering all three sound forms of -ed (/t/ as in jumped, /d/ as in played, /ed/ as in painted) and record which are marked. Separate regular from irregular verbs in the data. Rule out final consonant deletion as a speech cause. Gather dialect information.
- Tips
- An obligatory context is a regular verb describing a completed event. Score correct when -ed is present in any sound form. Overgeneralizations on irregular verbs ("goed") show the rule is being learned and are recorded under sl-syn-013, not scored here. Use the picture-pair format so the past meaning is unambiguous.
- Limits
- Past tense in retells is affected by narrative skill and memory; keep stories short. The /t/ and /d/ endings are easy to miss when scoring by ear, especially before another consonant; record probes.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 picture pairs showing an action in progress and then completed and asked "What happened?", the student will produce the -ed ending on regular verbs when telling about completed events (such as "jumped," "painted") independently with at least 80% accuracy on obligatory contexts for regular past tense, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 20% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
