Add where and how information with phrases
When to use this goal
For students whose sentences stop at the verb ("He ran") and who do not add location (in the park) or manner (quickly, with a stick) that listeners need. Base the choice on a language sample. Builds on sl-syn-002.
- Baseline
- Elicit 20 picture descriptions and record whether each includes a location or manner phrase without prompting. Check that the student knows the prepositions receptively (sl-rec-012); missing phrases can reflect concept gaps. Count prepositional phrases in a play sample for present levels.
- Tips
- Score correct when the description includes an accurate prepositional phrase or adverb of the type required by the condition; a bare location word ("chair") without a preposition is partial. Score the phrase, not the rest of the grammar, unless the goal also lists other structures. Rotate pictures so phrases are not memorized.
- Limits
- Elicited descriptions overestimate spontaneous use. Preposition choice depends on spatial concepts that may need separate teaching. The goal does not measure sentence length overall (see sl-exp-002).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 action pictures and asked "Where?" or "How?" after the student describes the action, the student will add a prepositional phrase or adverb that tells where or how (such as "The cat is sleeping on the chair," "She painted carefully") independently with at least 80% accuracy on picture descriptions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 25% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Grammar, Syntax & Morphology.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
