Practice the target form during a family routine

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students whose families want to help with grammar at home and who use the target form in therapy with support. Family members model and record during one daily routine they choose. Base the choice on therapy data and a conversation with the family.

Baseline
Ask the family to fill in the 5-box log for one week without changing how they talk, then review it together. Show one or two short example videos of modeling. Check that the routine happens most days.
Tips
Fill in the form being taught in therapy. Each box on the log is one chance during the routine. Families model in whatever language they speak at home; if the target is an English form, they practice only if they are comfortable in English, and home-language talk is always encouraged. Keep the log short and thank families for any data, even partial.
Limits
Family logs are less precise than therapy data and are reported as a separate measure. Families vary in time and comfort; the goal must never become a burden. Confirm progress with therapy probes.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a family-chosen daily routine (such as a meal, bath time, or a car ride), recorded on a 5-box home log, the student will use Blank to fill in: [target grammar form, e.g. is plus -ing] in their own sentence during the routine independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly home logs, as measured by direct observation collected weekly from the family's home log.

  • Issue: Blanks filled in. 1 blank is still empty: [target grammar form]. Write in what this student will work on, such as the target sound or the strategy the team chose.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Grammar, Syntax & Morphology.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
