Report what someone said using said that
When to use this goal
For secondary students who quote others word for word or garble reports of what someone said ("Mr. Lee said I am going" when Mr. Lee is the one going). Reported speech is needed for passing on messages, retelling conflicts, and summarizing sources. Base the choice on structured probes and observed retells.
- Baseline
- Present 10 statements (half statements, half questions) and record each report. Note pronoun errors, missing reporting verbs, and question word order inside the report. Keep tense shifting flexible: "said that practice is moved" is acceptable in everyday speech when the fact is still true.
- Tips
- Score correct when the report keeps the meaning and the pronouns point to the right people. Do not require formal tense backshift when the meaning is clear. Use messages from the student's real day (coach, teacher, coworker) for carryover.
- Limits
- Memory for the original statement affects accuracy; replay is allowed as a support. Indirect questions overlap with embedded clauses (sl-syn-032).

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 short recorded statements or questions from different speakers to pass on to a third person, the student will report each statement or question with a reporting verb and a clause that shifts the pronouns and tense to fit (such as "The coach said that practice was moved to 4") independently with at least 80% accuracy on reported statements and questions, across 3 consecutive therapy sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected during each therapy session.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Grammar, Syntax & Morphology.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
